Sage Institute’s Meditation Leader Training Program

It’s increasingly clear that the human race is in need of a radical shift in consciousness if we are to transform this world from one of selfishness and exploitation into one of thriving interdependence and community. Thankfully, we have some of the best tools for growing human consciousness right at our fingertips: meditation and mindfulness practices.

You’ve experienced the life-changing tools of mindfulness and meditation in your own life, If you feel passionate about sharing these transformational tools and skills, join us in a powerful 9-month journey into meditation leadership.

Sage Institute’s Meditation Leader Training Program is a comprehensive meditation teacher training program for experienced meditation practitioners to learn how to effectively and authentically teach others the transformative practices of meditation and mindfulness.

Sage Institute offers one of the only meditation teacher training programs developed and approved by Buddhist teachers from a 2500-year old lineage. Sean Tetsudo Murphy, lead teacher, worked closely with a variety of Buddhist and meditation experts to develop our unique curriculum. Sean is a formal Zen Sensei with over 30 years of Zen training and 25 years of experience teaching meditation to laypeople. Although we introduce our students to the prevailing meditative forms in the West such as Zen and Vipassana, our program has developed its own inclusive, secular approach to teaching meditation and mindfulness, suitable for students of any contemplative tradition.

The next cohort starts in early 2026 — Apply today!

Sage Institute is proud to announce the establishment of the Donna Moon Martin Scholarship for BIPOC individuals participating in our Meditation Leader Training Program. Moon, as her friends called her, was a remarkable and resilient meditation practitioner, whose life embodied courage, compassion, and perseverance. Of mixed Sandia Pueblo and New Mexican Hispanic heritage, Moon had roots in the Southwest that spanned centuries. In addition, she was adopted into the Siletz Confederation of tribes in the Pacific Northwest, where Chief William Hauser DePoe honored her with the tribal name Princess Moon in gratitude for her help in caring for him in his final years.

Moon’s extraordinary strength and determination were evident early in her life. After a horseback accident left her with a spinal injury, she developed her own meditative visualization practice to aid her recovery: mentally rehearsing movements until she could walk again. Her dedication and ingenuity enabled her not only to regain full mobility, but also to cultivate a profound insight into mind-body practice.

As a student later in life in the Holistic Health department at University of New Mexico - Taos, Moon was instrumental in the founding of the Sage Institute Meditation Leader Training, serving as student coordinator and one of the first three participants to complete the program. Her commitment to community, mindfulness, and equitable access to practice has left a lasting legacy.

In honor of her life, courage, and dedication, the Donna Moon Martin Scholarship continues her legacy of resilience, insight, and leadership in the meditation community.

New Opportunities to Deepen Your Zen Meditation Practice

Sensei Sean has been working with people individually regarding their meditation practice for many years. However, it has recently become clear that a more formal community opportunity for instruction and guidance is essential to deepening practice.

For those interested in exploring and deepening Zen practice, Sean Tetsudo Murphy Sensei and Ven. Lani Banner will be offering meditation, instruction/dharma talks, and dokusan (private interview with Sean-sensei). Live over Zoom. All are welcome.
